Spring is here!

And you know what that means. New anime for the masses to devour. Last year was kind of a let down. But, maybe this year will be different. Here's a list of what titles I'll be watching:

Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood- A new FMA series is always a good thing in my book. And it looks like they are going to be following the manga this time around.
Shangri-La- I don't know too much about this one but the character designs look good. Hopefully, Gonzo won't go anti-fansub on us again.
07-Ghost- I've read a bit of the manga.
Pandora Hearts- Don't know anything about this show.
Phantom ~Requiem of Phantom~- With a name like this it's probably going to be crappy. I'll be checking it out anyway.

I might also check out:
Guin Saga- It looks a little GAR. But, who knows it may actually be good.
Hayate no Gotoku!!- I haven't finished the first season yet (damn you Bandai where are the boxsets for this?! T_T). But, I'll still check it out.
Hanasakeru Seishounen- It's shoujo. That's all I know about it.

Other than that, I'll probably be watching older stuff. And catching up with series that I've missed.

Wow, it's been a long time since I've posted in here. Anyway, there's not much new going on. I'm still working at my crappy dead end job. I did get to visit some friends from Wayne last weekend. And I'm going to Willy-con in April.

Ants everywhere!

Today I found a nest of ants on my aquarium. I literally had to take apart the hood just to get rid of them. Quite a few of them ended up in the aqaurium but for some reason my fish won't eat them. I'm hoping this is just a freak incident because I don't want to fight with ants all spring/summer.

TV and anime burnout

Sometimes, I wonder why I even have a tv. It seems like there are less and less shows that I sit down and watch. I've tried to watch Lost but just end up getting bored with it and CSI is just getting repetitive. It's even wose on the anime side of things. I hate this current trend of making every H-game ever made into an anime. It seems every season there are more and more H-game based anime and it's just annoying as hell. I think I need to find a new hobby before I go insane.

I'm Not Dead Yet

As the title states I'm not dead yet. But, I've been in a rut made of boredom and laziness. Lately, all I've been doing is sleeping and working. And it doesn't help that the work I do is boring. I basically just check and make sure my client is still breathing or help him if he needs to go to the restroom. And unless there is any cleaning that needs to be done that's about all I do. The rest of the night I just sit there like a bump on a log either reading or watching tv.
Well, enough of my bitching. Here's the review that I promised to write up:

Ouran High School Host Club:

Haruhi is a poor tomboyish student at a school for the ultra-wealthy, able to attend because of a scholarship, and unable to even afford a uniform. One day, she stumbles across the decidedly peculiar but very popular Ouran Host Club. She tries to leave, but accidentally breaks a vase, and unable to pay for it, she's told that she'll have to stay and do odd jobs. That is, until they decide she would be more valuable as a club member. Not realizing she's female due to her appearance, they fix her up and give her a male uniform. She's an instant hit, so they decide to have her keep up the charade even after they find out the truth...

What Emerald Says:

I read the first volume of Ouran Host Club about a month or so before the anime aired and knew that I had to watch the anime. The plot sounds a bit generic and cliche (poor girl surrounded by cute guys, stuff happens and blah, blah, blah). But I think that the writers/directors made a smart decision when they focused more on the comedy aspect (who knew banana jokes could be that funny). That and the animation is great. I liked the OP and ED themes. And I really liked the characters. The ending was also good but I'm hoping for a second season.

My Rate:

10/10- It's a great anime. Check it out if you like comedic shoujo titles. But be aware that it does not follow the manga. So if you are a fan of the manga you may not like this.

I was finally motivated to finish this thing. There are a few more changes that need to be made but other than that I am done. I was getting tired of using blue and purple in everything so I decided to use green this time. The characters in the header are from Ouran High Host Club. I'll be writting up a review of the anime sometime tomorrow but right now I'm way too tired.

Well I've finally gotten around to snapping a few pics of my future cichlid tank. I have Tiger barb in there now but soon they'll be gone.

The water is starting to stable out and soon I'll have some plants in there to liven it up.

Procrastination and the RenFest

Well it's been awhile since I've been to the Kansas City Renfest and I have to say it was awesome. There were hundreds of booths selling stuff and very cool performances. If my brother hadn't whined the whole time we were there it would have been a perfect day.

There were so many people in costume and I was thinking of purchasing one at Renfest but they were $75-$90 a piece. The comedy performances were great especially the Mental Pause women and the Washer Wenches. Some of the jokes were a little too much for the kids but I don't think they got them. The weapons they had for sale were really cool too. They also had games such as throwing knives, stars, and axes at a target. And they also had a few archery games set up.
The joust was also fun to watch. I went to both jousts that day. There was another one later in the day but I didn't make it to that one.
The artist booths were awesome too. Both Nene Thomas and Ruth Thompson were there. And I purchased prints from both. I didn't get to meet them but it was still cool that they were there. Well that's just about all I have to say about Renfest.

Meetings, partings, and other junk

I've decided that people are just strange. Especially, people who happen to be male. About four weeks ago I was walking back from Hastings (I had bought several manga and novels) and this guy decided to talk to me for about three o four blocks. Then he would not leave me alone until I gave him my phone number. So I ended up giving it to him and hoped he would leave me alone. But no he called me twice that day. A few days later he asked if I had a boyfriend and I basically told him I didn't want a boyfriend. Luckily he hasn't called me since. But why the hell would you ask someone you've just met to go out with you? Maybe I'm just old fashioned but I think that's odd and creepy.

It seems like all of my family members have gotten divorced. And it turns out Tammy (my biological mom) is no different. As soon as she finishes school in April she's going to file for it and then we're moving. And honestly, I kind of knew this was coming before she told me. But, it's not the nd of the world. I think my brother and sister should be fine with it.

Mondays Suck!

I am now convinced that mondays are the worst days ever. Today I ended up over sleeping and missing a manditory orientation. Then I went to get my frames and they are all one inch bigger then they are suppose to be. So now I have to make new borders for every picture and a backing for each one because I can't take the frames back. I'm just glad nothing has gone wrong with my computer yet. *dies of frustration*

Well, I finally reached the weekend and that means a three day break from work (I get Sat, Sun, and Mon off). So, why didn't I post anything sooner? I was way too tired to type. The overnight shift is great but I end up sleeping a lot more then I normally would. I work in a pretty easy house as far as what needs to be done at night. However, I do have to take one of the residents to the restroom twice a night. Other then that I just have to do paperwork and make sure everyone is okay. The only real problem I have is with the staff members not arriving on time (my shift ends at 7 not 9 morons!). I'm not certified to give meds so, when 7 am rolls around someone needs to be there to give meds. And I have a feeling this will be a persistent problem on Saturday mornings because the woman who works the day shift on the weekends doesn't feel that she has to arrive at 7. So I'm going to be filling out an incedent report on Monday.

Creepy Shows

I like creepy shows but for some reason there just aren't that many creepy anime titles. So I was happy when Jigoku Shoujo (Hell Girl) and ～ayakashi～ Japanese Classic Horror aired. Here's my review:

Jigoku Shoujo:

What ANN Says:

Somewhere in the vast sea of the Internet, there's a website that can only be accessed at the stroke of midnight. Known as the Jigoku Tsushin, rumor has it that if you post a grudge there, the Jigoku Shoujo will appear and drag whoever torments you into the inferno. Very little is known about the girl - all we know for sure is that she lives with her equally enigmatic grandmother, that three magical straw dolls accompany and serve her, and that whenever a posting on the Jigoku Tsushin moves her, she becomes the Jigoku Shoujo.

What Emerald Says:

This show definitely has a Twilight Zone feel too it. The animation is top notch and the OP is great. But the pacing is off. They spent way too much time focusing on the revenge aspect of the show and each episode is predictable. The one thing that livens the show up are Tsugumi and Hajime. Without those two characters I don't think the show would have been as enjoyable. I really hope the creators of this show learn their lesson and make the second season less predictable.

My Rating:

7.9/10- I liked the show but it was way too predictable.

A collection of three classic Japanese horror stories: "Yotsuya Kaidan," the story of a wife betrayed by her husband who seeks vengeance even in death. "Tenshu Monogatari," the story of forbidden love between a goddess and a human, and "Bakeneko," the story of a mysterious cat monster with a vendetta against a certain family.

What Emerald Says:

I'm a fan of legends and horror stories so when I found out that an anime would be coming out about three of the more popular legends in Japan I decided it was something I had to watch. The animation for all three stories are pretty good. But the OP and ED themes are annoying and the Yotsuya Kaiden arc could have been longer. I liked the last two arcs better. They seemed more complete then the first one. All-in-all it's a pretty good show.

My Rating:

8.5/10- Some people might not like that the animation is drastically different in each story. And others might be annoyed with the OP and ED. But if you like Japanese horror stories then check it out.

Month From Hell

Hi all, sorry for the long wait between posts. I've been having a pretty crappy month. A week after my hamster died my grandmother died (she died on a thursday too just like my hamster). It was really hard to see her go. And my job search has gone nowhere. I've found maybe one or two jobs in the paper I can actually apply for. The job market is horrible here. But I've been promised a job in St Joseph MO. So I'll be moving there the 8th. Which means my bank account, medication, and everything else will have to be changed. *dies from stress*
Sorry for the long rant. I'll post some anime reviews later to make up for it.

A Manga Filled Birthday

My birthday was today and to celibrate I went to Hastings and spent both of my gift certificates on manga. It was great I found a ton of used manga (only $4.50)and some titles that hadn't been in last week. So anywho here's what I got:

Ouran High School Host Club vol. 2: I promised myself I would try not to get ahead of the tv series but it was only $4.50 so I had to pick it up.

Fushigi Yugi Genbu Kaiden vol 1: I really liked this series when shoujomagic was scanslating it plus it was another used title.

Death Note vol 5: More fun with psychos and notebooks!

Earthian vol. 3: Only one more volume to go :)! I really like this series. It's really expensive though at $14.95 per volume.

The Week from Hell

Well I can officially say that this past week has been the week from hell. It started off with my hamster (Snowball) getting sick on Monday. He was loosing hair and being really sluggish. I sent him to the vet on Tuesday but by Thursday he passed away. That same day I came down with a cold (still sick). My brother also got sick on Tuesday or Wednesday and has been off work since then.

Summer Season

The summer season is coming up and with it are new shows (I haven't even finished shows from this season T_T). And it looks like there won't be as many shows as this season. But here are a few I'll be watching:
Kikoushi-Enma- The character designs look interesting. I just hope it has a good plot.
Demashitaa! PowerPuff Girls Z- It will likely be a generic magical girl anime but I need something to replace Pretty Cure. Plus it's PowerPuff Girls.
Honey & Clover 2- I loved the first season and the extra episode so I'll defenitly be watching this.
Otogi Jushi Akazukin- Liked the first series so I'll be watching this as well.
Chevalier- I know nothing about this show but the character animation looks good. And it's set in France (I think).
Well that's it unless something else catches my eye.

New manga from Viz

Viz has licensed some new stuff:
Cain Saga- I'm really surprised this wasn't licensed earlier. They have the second half of the Cain Saga (God Child) so I don't understand why they didn't release the first half before God Child was released.
Hayate the Combat Butler- Don't know too much about this one. I'll have to check it out.
La Corda d’Oro- I've heard that they had the license to this awhile back. Don't know why they're sitting on it though.
O-Parts Hunter (666 Satan)- It doesn't surprise me that they changed the name to this.
Punch- Don't know anything about this.
Reborn- Or this.
Read Or Dream- Not surprising that they have this. They've already released Read Or Die. So it would make sense that they would license the sequel.
Tail of the Moon- I've been waiting for someone to license this for awhile. It's a really good manga. I don't know why they didn't license Tsuki no Toiki, Ai no Kizu too.

Burning Eyes and Otome

I've finished a ton of shows these few weeks but the two shows that stick out in my mind are Shakugan no Shana and Mai Otome. Why? Because I almost didn't download them. I really didn't think I would like either shows. But I decided to give them a chance anyway and was rather surprised by both shows. So here's my review:

Shakugan no Shana:

What ANN Says:
Sakai Yuuji, a high school student who expected his normal life to last forever, is dead. When he was on his way home he witnessed a shocking view as the world suddenly froze: people were engulfed by blue flames and a monster resembling a large doll swallowed them. Just as the monster prepared to consume Yuuji, a sword-wielding girl in black attire with flaming red eyes and hair that burns like embers saved him from the monster. The girl called herself a "Flame Haze" who hunts the "Guze no Tomogara", creatures from another world. As Yuuji noticed a blue flame in his chest, she called him a "Torch", a temporary replacement, saying that the "real" Yuuji's existence had already ended. Unfazed, Yuuji befriended the strange girl, named her "Shana", and joined her fight against Tomogara and other Flame Hazes.

What Emerald Says:
Going into this show I had negative views. I had read that it was filled with fanservice and that the story was just kind of blah. But after marthoning the first 12 episodes I had a change of opinion. The animation and fight scenes are great but for me it was the characters that made me love the show. It also didn't seem like a monster of the week type show as many of the main villians weren't killed off in one episode. My only gripe about the show would be the ending. It just seemed rushed.

My Rating:
8/10- The ending could have been better but with a movie on the way and hopefully a second season I have a feeling they'll make up for that.

Mai Otome:

What ANN Says:
Arika Yumemiya has traveled far in search of her goal: the prestigious Gualderobe Academy. This is the school where young girls are trained to become Otomes, protectors of royal leaders throughout the lands. Here, Arika makes plenty of friends, but some enemies know something about her past that she does not. Nevertheless, her spirit and determination will keep pushing her forward. --- Adapted from its predecessor, Mai-HiME, this series is not a direct sequel, but an alternate universe setting featuring some of the Mai-HiME cast (though with different personalities).

What Emerald Says:
I was not looking forward to this show at all. To be honest I wasn't really a fan of Mai Hime when it came out. And this being a sequel I thought it would be horrible. But after seeing some screenshots of it and some fairly good reviews I decided to try it out and I'm glad I did. There are so many plot twists in this show and so many great characters. The animation is great and I really liked some of the mechanized creatures in the show. And I actually finished this show (unlike Mai Hime I think I only got five episodes into that show). I didn't really care for the ED though it was just to happy and popish. My other gripe would be that I think the writers went a little bit too far with some of the plot twists. One episode in particular will have fans yelling at the screen but I don't want to ruin it so you'll just have to watch the show to see what I'm talking about.

My Rating:
8.9/10- Some fans might be ticked at later episodes. But overall it's a really good show and you don't have to watch Mai Hime to enjoy it.

RO and Sims 2 addictedness

The past few weeks have gone by so fast since I've started playing Ragnarok Online (my brother introduced me to it when I was in Missouri). I've literally spent hours trying to level up my characters and make more money on that game. It's fun though. Another game I've gotten readdicted to is Sims 2. This weekend I spent a ton of time finding mods and different stuff for my sims. Anywho last weekend was great. I bought a ton of comics at the comic con (alot of which I'm still reading including Witchblade). And the itailian restraunt we went to was awesome.

Hello from Missouri!

Yellow! It's finally Easter vacation and I'm here in Missouri. So far the trip has been fun. When we arrived on thursday we went to Kansas City. It's huge! We got lost just driving a few blocks. For lunch we ate at the Rainforest Cafe (http://www.rainforestcafe.com/). It's an absolutly amazing place to eat. They have huge aquariums at the entrance and inside the building and animated critters. Later we wandered around the mall and I bought some anime.The food was great.:)
Friday was Israel's birthday so we had a huge party. I had margaritas and wine spritzers. Needless to say the next day I had a hangover.

Boogiepop and Others

Back of the book summary:

There is an urban legend that children tell one another about a shinigami that can release people from the pain they may be suffering. This "Angel of Death" has a name--Boogiepop. And the legends are true. Boogiepop is real.

When a rash of disappearances involving female students breaks out at Shinyo Academy, the police and faculty assume they just have a bunch of runaways on their hands. Yet, Nagi Kirima knows better. Something mysterious and foul is afoot. Is it Boogiepop or something more sinister...?

My comments:
Finally, finished reading the first book in this series and I really liked it. The writing style is a little different since it's in a non-linear fashion (just like the anime series). And if you've seen the anime you'll recognize a lot of the characters and stories but there is a ton of stuff in this book that the anime series didn't even begin to cover. Overall it's really an addictive book and Seven Seas did a wonderful job translating it.

My Rating: 9/10

Willycon!

I just got back from Willycon today and I'm still hyper from it! The con was so much fun and this year's artists, John and Denise Garner, were really cool people (I have two of their pieces). ^^ I enjoyed their panel on getting into the art industry and the kareoke thing they set up was pretty fun too. I also learned how to play D&D during one of the intro panels. Later, I played Munchikin (very fun parody card game). I also bought a lot of cool stuff from the dealers room and the art room (I finally got a Roth Thompson piece). I'll be posting a few pictures of the art I bought and a few of me in costume later. :)

Manga Blitz

This weekend I picked up a ton of stuff at Waldens. :) They had so much manga there that it was kind of hard to choose but these are the titles that I got:

Loveless vol 1: Yes it's a BL title but the art is so good and it actually has a plot so I really don't mind.

Boogiepop and others vol 1: So far this book is great. It's just as creepy and twisted as the anime series.

The Dreaming vol 1: This is a great OEL title. I've read other stuff by this author/artist so I was more than willing to scoop this up.

Angel Sanctuary vol 5: I don't know why the Hastings in my area doesn't carry this series. But I had to get this just so I can actually finish the series one day.

Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne vol 1: I've read the scanlations of this so I figured it was only fair that I start collecting it once it was licensed here.

Japanese Horror

I've been watching and reading a lot of Japanese/Asian horror lately. The latest film I've watched is called One Missed Call. It was a really good film. The ending was a little too happy for me (personally I was betting that the main character would die).

It looks like AS has picked up Eureka Seven for it's Friday Night Fix. It will premier online April 14th and will be on tv April 15th. I'm happy that they've finally added a new show (and it has mechas so it has to be good right?) to they're progaming. Plus, it's 51 episodes so it should be on the air for awhile. Now they need to find something to replace Inuyasha with when it ends, which should be soon. I'm hoping they replace it with Bleach but you never know. They might decide to play older episodes of Inuyasha for awhile.

Doctor Who

Just watched the first two episodes of Doctor Who and I love it. It's not really a serious show but it's still really good. The Scifi Channel was smart to pick this show up because let's face it Star Gate: Atlantis and Star Gate SG1 are getting very boring.

Hamsters!

I just got a new hamster yesterday from my brother's friend (stalker). She's an albino dwarf hamster named Melinda (Melly for short). The extra cage I got for my older hamster, Snowball, is now her home. Snowball was ticked at me when I seperated the cages but he has enough room in the other cage. She's so tiny that half the time I can't find her in the cage at all. And so far she's been quite nippy. Every time I stick my hand in the cage she either bats at it or runs away. But hopefully she'll calm done once she gets use to the new cage and everything.

You're So Lucky, Lucky, Lucky....

The one good thing about not having a job is that I have a lot of time on my hands (or maybe thats a bad thing). So when I'm not looking for a job or cleaning the house I spend a majority of my time watching anime. Here are a couple of series that I've been watching:

Paradise Kiss:

Short Summary taken from Animenewsnetwork:

Yukari is a typical high-school student who listens to her parents and attends school everyday. As she starts to question her way of life, she encounters a group of fashion design students who has a clothing label known as "Paradise Kiss". The group needs to find a model to showcase their designs in an up-coming fashion show and decides to pick Yukari instead. Initially, Yukari was reluctant to be associated with this seemingly eccentric group, but eventually, she realises that they are really nice people. Furthermore, their passion and enthusiasm to follow their ideals and dreams make Yukari realise that she has not been enjoying her life and motivate her to pursue her own dreams. The story follows Yukari as she gets involved in the group and eventually falls in love with the leader, George.

My Impression:

This show is awesome! The animation is great and from the six episodes I've been able to watch there doesn't seem to have any drastic changes as far as quality is concerned. And the characters are fun and interesting. But, most importantly the music for the show is awesome. The opening theme "♥Lonely in Gorgeous♥" is by Tommy february6 and despite being a Jpop song I can actually listen to it without wanting to stab my ears out. The ending theme "Do You Want To" is by FRANZ FERDINAND. :) I was extremely happy when I heard the ending theme for the first time (I'm still wondering how they got the rights to this song though). Hopefully it will be licensed soon.

My Rating:

9.5 out of 10- I can't give it a ten out of ten until I've seen the other six episodes but so far it's great.

Short Summary:

One day during the spring break, Haruka saw a man standing in blue shining snow on the roof of the church. He was Karasu, who came from a world 15 years in the future, known as the “Dimension La'cryma.” Karasu was a Dragon Knight of that country. Actually, he was Haruka’s childhood friend, Yuu -- only he was 15 years older than the Yuu she knew.
In that world, 15 years in the future, a severe war had been waged between Dimension La’cryma and Dimension Shangri-La for 10 years. La’cryma was trying to save the world using the 'high technologies', while Shangri-La was trying to demolish the whole of the dimensions. Before the overwhelming power of Shangri-La, La’cryma was loosing ground with every battle. The only hope to resist Shangri-La is “Dragon Torque”. High command noticed that, so they sent Dragon Knights, including Karasu, to the world 15 years in the past to retrieve the torque.
Meanwhile, Yuu decided to run away from home out of depression, and Haruka came with him, citing a childhood promise to run away together. However, the older Karasu reappeared in front of them with the blue snow. At that moment, Haruka’s neck began to shine and the “Dragon Torque” appeared.

My Impressions:

This show has been one crazy ride. The animation is a little strange but it's refreshing to see some different styles of animation rather than the same cookiecutter styles that we've been seeing. I'm also enjoying the way the show uses time travel and parralel universes it's not really something you see often in anime (or done well for that matter). Some of the themes are a little heavy such as the quantum physics stuff (even simplified it's confusing. And the opening and ending themes are somewhat forgetable.

My Rating:

9.0 out of 10- The show's quirky animation and all the quantum physics jargon might scare some folks off. But if you are willing to look past that it's really a good show.

I have two applications to fill out today. One is for a hotel called Norfolk Country Inn and the other is for an optical clinic in the mall. I'm really hoping I can get a job soon. Being unemployed sucks so much. :(

Updated my blog quite a bit. The layout took forever to do but I think it looks better now. Anywho, last night I watched Ringu 2 and I have to say it was much better than the American version. The graphics were horrible but then again it was a low budget film and at least it didn't have rampaging deer in it.
